The Toltecs
The Toltecs are a people who would have radiated between 900 and 1200 AD in Mesoamerica. “Master builders” as their name means in the Nahuatl language and who would have been a people of outstanding craftsmen, of whom the Aztecs claimed to be the descendants.
But who were them Toltecs ?
This civilization, which would have developed around Tula (Tollan, in Nahuatl), in Mexico, were considered by the Aztecs as the origin of all civilization.
According to the latter, they possessed a refined culture and were masters of craftsmanship and art in general.
Stories often romanticized and sometimes even mythological, but many things have been attested to by archaeological discoveries made in Tula, their capital.
There is indeed an architecture and an impressive artistic mastery.
For example, some alabaster or rock crystal vases were found, which are among the most refined in the region.
Majestic monuments have also survived to the present day, such as two large pyramids, a colonnaded gateway or even a large palace decorated with bas reliefs and the famous Atlantean statues representing Toltec warriors .
Regarding their religion, they had a pantheon of various cosmic gods, as well as the famous feathered serpent figure god, Quetzalcoatl.
A deity similar to Kukulkan among the Maya. A close cultural link also existed with the Mayas of Chichen Itza and the Toltecs , according to the archaeological data that have been found, without it being known exactly which one.
Indeed, many mysteries still hover over this civilization, which suddenly disappeared, without anyone really knowing why, in the 12th century of our era.
